How to Measure my Hat Size?

Measuring the right hat size can be difficult because there are a multitude of factors to consider. Henri Henri hat shop invites you to consult this handy little guide to familiarize yourself with hat sizes!

How do I measure my head circumference?

In order to know what size hat to choose, it is essential to know the dimensions of the head it should cover.

Step 1

Take a flexible tape measure or a dressmaker's tape measure and place the end in the center of the forehead, slightly above the brow bone. If you do not have a flexible tape measure, you can also use a knotted string, a piece of rope or a fabric headband around the head that you can then measure.

Step 2

Then go around the head, passing slightly above the ears and at the top of the occiput, the widest point at the back of the head. You will obtain a measurement in centimeters or inches that will help you determine your head circumference.

Step 3

The available hats and caps are accompanied by a "Size Guide" tab which will allow you to obtain the correspondence of the available sizes and to benefit from advice on different shapes, cuts and brands.

As a general rule, if the measurement obtained is between two sizes, we strongly recommend that you opt for the larger size. Even better, come try on the item at Henri Henri, the oldest hat shop in Canada, and benefit from our expert advice as well as a personalized size adjustment!

What if the hat is rigid?

The more flexible a hat is, the more it will conform to the precise shape of your head. However, hats with a rigid finish, such as some cowboy hats and flat-brim hats, are more difficult to wear if the shape of the crown does not correspond exactly to the shape of your head.

For this reason, we recommend that you pay attention to the rigidity of a hat before choosing a size. If you are unable to try it on in store, we recommend that you opt for the larger size than you usually take. It is always easier to adjust a hat that is a little too big than to stretch a hat that is too tight.

Hats and Size Shrinkage

The cycle of humidity variations gives hats a natural tendency to shrink over time. As they moisten and dry with each use, the fibers that make up felt and fabrics gradually contract, leading to a slight shrinkage that can be as much as one size smaller than the standard size.

Leather products, on the other hand, have a natural tendency to lose their moisture and flexibility, which shrinks and stiffens the leather.

Maintaining the size of your hat

Henri Henri specializes in the care of felt hats. Our expert hatters can clean, mold and stretch most felt hats. For straw, leather and fabric hats, a visual inspection in store with a cleaner is necessary first.

Leather hats, for their part, require regular maintenance. A leather protector such as the leather cleaning kit will help maintain a constant humidity level, keeping the leather soft and comfortable.

At home, a Hat Jack hat stretcher will allow you to adjust, stretch and maintain the size and comfort of your hats.
